Delaney Talks to AI
AI. Two letters that infiltrate so much of what we see and hear on a daily basis these days at work, on television, scrolling on our phones, everywhere. So before you roll your eyes at yet another mention of AI, please take a moment on this Valentine's Day and let me share with you one of my most heartfelt applications of the technology so far.
As a Dad of a 3 year old little girl, I recently discovered an alternative to endless hours of Peppa Pig and Paw Patrol. One evening, I was using Chat-GPT 4 to continue to train our Advance Bot v1 (more on that in future blogs) when my daughter, Delaney, walked into my office and asked if she could “help me with work”. How can I turn down an offer like that?
So I propped her up in my chair and asked her what kind of picture she’d like to see Daddy’s new GPT show her. Her eyes lit up. And without taking a breath, she screamed excitedly, “Daddy, show me a princess with red hair like Ariel riding a hippo through an enchanted forest made of ice cream!”.
Impressively detailed. She takes after her Mom.
And so, her wish was GPT-4’s command. It took a little less than 10 seconds to generate the picture above. Roughly the same amount of time it takes for YouTube to start streaming the same episode of Peppa Pig we’ve watched several hundred times. But this was different. The look in her eyes said it all - similar to what I saw when she opened her “super special gift from Santa” on Christmas morning. This was new. This was exciting. Now, Delaney wanted to see more.
We spent the next several minutes adding additional prompts to her initial request such as “make all the ice cream strawberry” and “make the hippo’s name Harry.” But you get the idea. The limitless possibilities not only fulfilled the nearly impossible task of keeping the attention of a toddler for a period of time but also got me to thinking - this really is just the beginning.
Today, we’re asking Chat GPT to help us with a recipe or create a logo for a fantasy football team. But one day, we’re going to look back on these days not much differently than we look back at 1995 when it comes to the internet. Maybe ChatGPT, Gemini, and Bard are the AOL, Hotmail and Yahoo of today. Or maybe they will prove to be stepping stones for what will pave the way for Gen AI to become intertwined into our lives in ways we can’t imagine. Maybe they will be around for generations.
The beauty of what we’re building with Gen AI is that no one really knows for sure. But what I do know is that this technology is here to stay. And those who choose to embrace it will be instrumental in determining just how much of a positive impact it can have on our lives.
I know Delaney is already a fan.
